Pavol Breslik (Ferrando); Stéphane Degout (Guglielmo); Thomas Allen (Don Alfonso); Maria Bengtsson (Fiordiligi); Rebecca Evans (Despina); Jurgita Adamonyte (Dorabella)

A classic story of love under the microscope is given a contemporary perspective in this performance of Mozart’s “school for lovers”. Così fan tutte is a compassionate examination of young love, full of wit and wonderful music which ensure its lasting popularity.

Così fan tutte was Mozart’s final collaboration with the Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, and Jonathan Miller’s production, created for The Royal Opera, brings out the timelessness of this exploration of the human condition.

"Thomas Allen's Alfonso and Rebecca Evans's Despina (less abrasive, and therefore more complex than before) are impeccable." (The Guardian ★★★)

"... Hengelbrock brings the vivacity for which he is famed. It’s ideal for Così fan tutte where timing and clarity are important. Excellent balance — the harpsichord continuo specially vivid." (Opera Today)

"... Miller exploits the comedic abilities of a superb cast to add even more joy to the performance.... the show was almost stolen by Sir Thomas Allen as the suave and manipulative Don Alfonso, and Rebecca Evans as the maid Despina who connives in his plans. Both displayed brilliant comic timing throughout the opera..." (Express)

"The programme for Jonathan Miller’s staging of Mozart’s third Da Ponte opera includes some neatly reasoned apologias for the tale’s dubious morals and its implication that a woman’s place is in the wrong. In the end, though, it’s the performance itself that best defends this marvellous opera. This seventh revival proves that with the right director, conductor and singers, no excuses are needed for Così fan tutte." (WhatsOn Stage ★★★★)
