Ekaterina Siurina: Amore e Morte (Rosenblatt Recitals)

Ekaterina Siurina (Soprano); Iain Burnside (Piano);

Ekaterina Siurina celebrates the song-writing talents of four great composers better known for their operas in a recital of flirtatious, passionate and grief-stricken lovers plighting their troths in Naples, Florence, Venice and elsewhere.

Reviews

"In the words of the old cliché, one song is worth the price of the disc alone: the spectacular performance of ‘Lo spazzacamino’ (The chimney-sweep). In a chugging 2/4 the tradesman assures us how much he enjoys his work (marked brillante and con slancio); then he bursts into an exhilarating waltz, both given full value by the two artists here. Burnside judges well when to be prominent and when to withdraw. Ekaterina Siurina has been notably successful to date in the lyric coloratura repertoire: there is an occasional occlusion in her tone as she ascends the scale, slightly reminiscent of Renata Scotto. I wonder if she may follow that soprano into heavier roles. Meanwhile this release is something of a collector’s item." (Classical Source)

"Siurina has a lovely voice, with a bright edge and superb projection, but she never tries to over-interpret...the overall effect is of relaxed enjoyment." (BBC Music Magazine)

"[Siurina's singing] has purity of tone, directness of line, and a naturalness of expression sufficient to all the material she espouses here...This is a most sympathetically performed selection of Italian songs, full of range and sensitivity as to juxtaposition and balance. It’s also been beautifully recorded." (Musicweb International)

"…a lovely Russian coloratura soprano" (The New York Times)

"…outstanding singing, with pristine tone and every note in place" (The Guardian)

"…full and beautiful voice" (Opera Britannia)

"a wonderful warmth to her voice" (The Express)

"a brilliantly pure, yet rich, soprano" (Music OMH)
